Black bear (Ursus americanus)

Black bear watching in British ColumbiaBlack bears in western regions are actually more cinnamon-brown than black. They weigh-in up to 900 lbs. and have longer ears and smaller shoulder humps than grizzlies.

Black bears are solitary animals; males and females only come in contact with each other to breed.

While black bears are powerful animals, their risk to humans is often exaggerated. They are generally timid animals and typically send their cubs up a tree when they encounter a predator. Regardless, use extreme caution if you ever run into one!

Black bears usually seen scavenging the shore line for berries and salmon. They can be seen on any of our Vancouver Island nature tours.
