About Len Gibbs
Gibbs paints in a unique and highly realistic style, illustrating moments in the lives of people we all know, with emotion that endears his works to the hearts of people everywhere. He is known for his ability to merge fine arts with impeccable detail creating paintings that resonate with everyone.
A master at his craft, Gibbs builds his paintings carefully, sketching his subject first and using preliminary watercolours to establish composition. He then builds his painting slowly, using thin brush strokes and coloured glazes to bring out textures, contrasts and colours. His subjects often focus on children, cowboys and marine subjects. Although the human form is always the emphasis of his work, his chief concern is the creation of mood and emotion.
Gibbs was born and raised in British Columbia and began his career as a commercial artist and creative director for an advertising agency before becoming a full-time artist in 1968. He is a self-taught artist whose mediums are acrylic on masonite and watercolour and dry brush on paper. He’s exhibited across North America and Europe and was made an Honorary Citizen of Victoria in 1985.
