Everything changed on July 15th, when the waters of Discovery Passage get hit with so many different closures that you almost need to hire a lawyer to decipher the rules. Basically, the West side of Discovery Passage from Orange Point to Hidden Harbour is subjected to gear restrictions which state that you can’t use bait or a weight of more than 6 ounces. Essentially, downrigger fishing is banned in this area. And don’t forget that powerboats are banned from the Tyee Pool so give the poor little rowboat guides a wide berth and a bit of a break from your wake.
Secondly, the traditional lighthouse closure comes into effect. This one closes the waters from Cape Mudge Village to the centre of Discovery Passage and then southeast to a line between the Red Can and a marker on Willow Point. Many of these closed areas had been producing fish lately, but what’s a boy (or girl) to do?
Some boys and girls point their bows north and head through Seymour Narrows to the waters of North Discovery Passage. This area is quite a different fishing experience as compared to fishing “The Hump”. Guides rediscover the joy of fishing with bait as this area is agreeable to anchovy fishing due to the lack of dogfish. It is also the main location for targeting pink, and sockeye salmon.
If you plan on heading north, you should also plan on taking a lunch because there are so many spots that you pretty much need the whole day to fish them all. Chatham Point at the intersection between Discovery Passage and Johnstone Strait is a good place to fish for migrating Chinook as is Greensea Bay at the Northwest corner of Sonora Island. Closer to home Deepwater Bay, Plumper Bay and Browns Bay are all good producers but be warned as the fishing can very often be shoulder to shoulder and one idiot Googan can spoil it for everyone. Respect everyone’s distance, especially when they have a fish on because these areas hold some lunkers and often give up the biggest fish of the year.
