Ladies and Ladies...

Painter's Lodge - June 27, 2011

This year’s annual Women’s Derby was an absolute success. We had women from all over the province and country join us for 12 hours of fishing and almost all caught their limit. This was our 19th year hosting this event at Painter’s Lodge and it only gets better every year. Some of the ladies have been here since the beginning; some were first timers this year.   Spread over 4 days, this event includes fishing and lots of entertainment.   This year’s theme was Hollywood and the ladies really ran with it. Our Saturday night dress up party had guest’s appearances from KISS, Marilyn Monroe, Miss Piggy, Laverne and Shirley; we even had ladies dressed as the red carpet…you have to check out the pictures! We played Hollywood Squares with the help of our “guide/crew celebrities.”
Even though it’s very busy and long weekend, I always have a blast. This year I accompanied Joanne Elves, a travel writer from Calgary on Fridays fishing trip. We each caught a fish, hers spring was 21 lbs. I had great time with Joanne and can’t wait to read about her experience. My little guy was snagged by the belly and it felt like 30 lbs. reeling it up; he was only 8 lbs. On our way home we had 2 humpback whales right outside of town across from the Quadra Island lighthouse putting on a show. This was the absolute coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my 25 years of life. THIS IS WHY I LOVE MY JOB! This giant species can weigh up to 80,000 lbs.; it really makes you feel insignificant. The best part-the picture I was able to get.
We had some media follow us throughout the weekend from Big Coast Sport Fishing, so be sure to watch for us on their show.
This event wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for our sponsors and staff members. I want give a giant thank-you to Pharmasave for donating all of the jam packed gift bags, Coca-Cola for the great jackets and Maridee for all the Oral-B products. The Oak Bay Marine Group donated all of the daily and door prizes along with the first and second place prizes of a trip to the 2012 women’s Derby and a trip to one of our Northern Resorts. Thanks to Ingrid McDougall and Peter Creighton for the third place prize of the stylish cruiser bicycle. I also have to give a shout out to all the crew at Painter’s Lodge for all their hard work. Chef Kevin and his team outdid themselves with all the meals. The Marine Centre and Dock staff for keeping all those fish and boats organized.
Drum roll please. Our 2011 Derby winners are Ingrid McDougall with the largest fish weighing in at 26 lbs., she went home with a return trip for 2 to next year’s Women’s Derby. Going home with a trip for 2 to one of our Northern Resorts is our 2nd place winner Barb Coefield. Her Chinook was 24.8 lbs. Last but not least riding her new bike home with a 23.9 pound Chinook in her basket is Grace Strong.
Congratulation Ladies and we hope to see you all again next year for our 20th anniversary! For more pictures check out our Facebook page at
