Good Luck Has It's Storms

Painter's Lodge and April Point Resort & Spa - July 24, 2012

I spend a fair amount of time roaming the property at Painter’s Lodge and April Point trying to capture beautiful moments and people but sometimes I'm not lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. For example, resident mink can be found at both resorts but they are extremely skittish and usually dart back under water as soon as you spot them. And believe me; I have tried to take their photos.  Bob Young and his wife, Irene, recently stayed at Painter’s Lodge and luck was on their side when they were visited by a mink at April Point.  Bob captured some great –and rare–images of the little creature.

I’m thankful that luck was on my side this afternoon. I was hoping to greet our Whale Watch Tour passengers as they returned and hear about their experiences so I made a visit to the Painter’s Lodge dock.  After a few minutes of waiting, a crew member pointed out vigorous splashing in the ocean halfway to Quadra Island.  The splashing turned out to be approximately 30 dolphins racing up Discovery Passage and, luckily, our tour guests were nearby in the zodiac taking it all in. The last leg of the tour turned out to be the most exciting. Moments later, a family of orcas appeared a few hundred metres behind them.  It must have been lunch time! Our zodiac guide ended up extending the tour by 45 minutes to follow the action north. Those of us on the dock were giddy over the wildlife adventure we witnessed from ashore.

See you in a few,
