Dwayne Mustard's Weekly Fishing Report (Oct. 5)

Painter's Lodge - October 5, 2013

The Chum have arrived! This week Dwayne lets us know what the Painter's Lodge guides have been using to reel in all those fish!

Popular wisdom amongst the Painter’s Lodge guides dictates that the Chum salmon really don’t start biting until after the first storm of the fall. Well, the first storm has come and gone and it was a doozy. The next day the boats headed off to Chatham Point and Greensea Bay for the morning flood tide, and lo and behold the Chum were biting.

They were hitting everything, even anchovies. But the most effective lure seemed to be a bubble gum pink hoochie in the octopus size with a big gaudy spin and glow in front of the hoochie. This year’s presentation is bigger and bolder than last year’s but the fish seem to be bigger too, with the Chum averaging in the eleven pound range. As an added bonus there are plenty of big Coho around as well, with a good number of hatchery fish mixed in.

So, while the storms are at bay goout and get yourself some Chum salmon because you just know that your cousins in Manitoba are going to be begging you for more delicious smoked salmon… and Christmas is right around the corner.

Until next time,

Tight lines and keep on fishin’
