We’re just one week into our August Heat Derby, but we’ve already seen loads of nice fish. The fishing continues to be excellent, with myself, the dock crew and the marine centre staff working feverishly just to keep up with all the fish being brought in.
With the daily prize being a free night’s stay at Painter’s Lodge and April Point, and the grand prize being a 3 day/2 night fishing package at Painter’s Lodge, there has been a lot of excitement on the dock. The stakes are pretty high and I often see the daily leader wander down to the dock when the evening boats come in to see if anyone has caught a bigger fish.
The derby kicked off with a bang, as Jody Berscheid caught a massive 27.9 pound Chinook at Painter’s Lodge on the very first day. Grace Strong and Bobbie Farinsky also brought some pretty nice fish to the Painter’s dock. Both ladies reeled in 27.6 pound Chinook during the first week, just missing the mark set by Jody.
However, the biggest fish thus far has come from April Point. Dave Zilch caught a 32 pound Tyee on Friday to rocket to the top of the derby leaderboard. That will certainly be a tough mark to beat, but with 24 days still remaining in the derby, and the fishing being as great as it is, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that someone could bring in a monster fish that’s even bigger than Dave’s.
Stay tuned for more updates on the August Heat Derby, and good luck to everyone who enters!
Catch you later,
