The 21st Annual Women’s Derby is all wrapped up. The awards ceremony tonight capped off an amazing weekend filled with great food, live entertainment, a costume party and lots of fishing!
The ladies arrived Thursday night and participated in guide draw to kick off the event. Friday night was the first ever Women’s Derby Calcutta. The guides were auctioned off to the highest bidder, with the derby winning guide sharing the total pot with the lady who purchased him. The bidding got pretty intense, with the last guide of the night, Max Skaarvik, going for a staggering $1000! Saturday night featured a Disney themed costume party and a performance by the all-girl band Curl. To finish the weekend off, an awards ceremony was held Sunday night followed by another live performance by Whiskey Point.
And what about the fishing? The ladies caught a total of 934 pounds of salmon. Third place went to Mary Martin and her 20.6 pound salmon. She won a custom bicycle courtesy of Peter Creighton and Russ Hays Bike Shop. Ingrid McDougall took second place with her 20.7 pound salmon. For her efforts, Ingrid received an all-inclusive trip to the Charlotte Princess Resort.
The grand prize went to Lonne Clark who reeled in a 22.5 pound salmon. Lonne received a free trip to next year’s Women’s Derby, as well as the coveted Women’s Derby Trophy.
Finally, Michelle Payne won the Calcutta with her purchase of the winning guide, Richard Breaukers. The two split the total pot, which turned out to be a hefty $3,145.
Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to all the participants. We’d also like to thank our event sponsor, Coca-Cola, as well as Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, Vancouver Airport Marriott and Harbour Air who all donated some great daily prizes.
I’m sure we here at Painter’s Lodge aren’t the only ones looking forward to next year’s event. Great fishing ladies and we’ll see you next year!
Catch you later,
