In 1994 Oak Bay Marine Group founder Bob Wright had a vision. He wanted to gather some of British Columbia’s best artists under one roof to create a unique and special celebration of art. 20 years later his vision lives on. Painters at Painter’s continues to be the premiere art event in BC, drawing artists and fans from all over the province for a weekend of presentations, discussions and amazing galleries of artwork.
This year’s event featured all the elements that have made the weekend such a hit with art lovers over the last two decades. The artists held a wide array of presentations and demonstrations that gave attendees unique insights into these professionals’ techniques, their thoughts on art and what inspires them to do what they do. Old friends reconnected and new friendships were made during a weekend that was about more than just art, but the bonds that have been formed and continue to be formed during the event.
This year’s Painters at Painter’s also featured some new and special presentations. The event kicked off with a three hour demonstration entitled “Theme & Variations – a Demonstration of four different takes on painting the figure.” Onlookers observed as David Goatley, Catherine Moffat, Brent Lynch and Nicholas Pearce painted the same model, each simultaneously giving their own interpretation of the same image.
This year’s special guest was Nick Tuele, the former Deputy Director and Chief Curator for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Nick’s presentation “The Visual Arts: Value and Worth” was able to give attendees a look at the business side of art, based on his many years spent as an art curator and a consultant.
Finally, to help celebrate 20 years of Painters at Painter’s, Robert Amos presented “The Video Archives of Painters at Painter’s.” Guests relived the storied history of this event through never before seen footage. It was the perfect way to cap off what was truly a wonderful weekend.
Of course, this is just a taste of the event. For more on what happened over the weekend we invite to check out this clip, produced by our friends at CHEK News.
To all the artists and attendees, we can’t thank you enough for supporting the event. It wouldn’t happen without you and we look forward to seeing you next year!
