10th Annual Women's Derby at Painter's Lodge

Painter's Lodge - June 25, 2002

Last weekend was the 10th annual Women's Fishing Derby at Painter's Lodge and wow, what a weekend. Congratulations to Leona Cooper of Burnaby B.C. who won the derby with a 28.5 lb. Chinook. She takes home 2 tickets to any Air Canada destination in North America and 2 spots at the inaugural Coho Classic on the MV Marabell in August. 2nd place went to Cathy Levelle who nabbed a nice 28 1/4 lb. Chinook and won 2 tickets with Air Canada Jazz and $500 cash. It was a 28 lb. Chinook that took 3rd place, netting Janet Oliver 2 tickets with Air Canada Jazz and $250 cash. Other notable prizes include the Hidden Weight category with Lynn Anderson's 15 lb. fish the winner and the Catch and Release prize going to Janet Law. Congratulations to all 101 women and their hundreds of fish.

The derby is just one indication of the great fishing in Campbell River. Average size continues to be in the high teens, but there are plenty of big ones out there, just ask Leona! Hot spots continue to be Lighthouse and Shelter Point anywhere from 150 to 250 feet. Flashers and hoochies the most common lures and with this great weather, people are enjoying their time on the water and seeing some great results.
